AMD acquires AI chip startup Taalas to boost inference performance by etching models into silicon

AMD is acquiring AI chip startup Taalas to strengthen its inference portfolio with model-specific silicon. Taalas designs integrated circuits that effectively encode a model into the chip, trading the flexibility of general-purpose accelerators for much higher throughput and potentially lower latency and power consumption. Early technology demonstrations reportedly reached up to 17,000 tokens per second, although production performance, supported models, and workload conditions have not been disclosed. For AI builders, the acquisition points to a more specialized inference market alongside programmable GPUs and custom accelerators.
