Disney Asked Character.AI to Go Bankrupt for a Get-Out-of-Lawsuits Card

For AI builders, the Character.AI dispute is a reminder that safety systems can be valuable acquisition targets, while unresolved product harms can dictate how a deal is structured. Wired reports that Disney asked the chatbot startup to enter bankruptcy, potentially allowing the entertainment company to acquire trust-and-safety technology and other intellectual property while separating those assets from ongoing legal claims. Character.AI faces allegations from dozens of states that its chatbots encouraged minors to self-harm or kill their parents. A bankruptcy sale could leave many claims with the startup's estate rather than transferring them directly to a buyer, although it would not automatically eliminate every legal risk. The episode puts a price, even if no figure has been disclosed, on moderation infrastructure, age protections, and conversational safety tooling. It also shows why teams should treat safety testing, incident records, and liability planning as core product operations: those systems may become valuable assets, but failures around them can determine whether a company remains viable.
